And the Pantone Color of the Year 2018 Goes to …

Each year, Pantone — the company best known for the Pantone Matching System, a standardized color reproduction system used primarily in printing and manufacturing — comes out with the “Color of the Year.” The Pantone Color of the Year is a symbolic color selection. The color chosen most often has a connection to the current trends of the world and usually makes its way into fashion, design, manufacturing, and marketing.

This year’s color just so happens to have been my favorite color when I was a child. Congrats to Ultra Violet on being named Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year.

Ultra Violet’s selection comes after a year that saw colorful mystical creatures such as unicorns and mermaids dominate fashion and trends (Who can forget Starbuck’s purple and pink ‘Unicorn Frappuccino’ craze?).

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Institute, said: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

I have already seen the color pop up this week as American Girl announced its ‘Girl of the Year’ — Luciana. She’s a girl with a head for science and her heart set on exploring Mars and just so happens to have a purple ‘Ultra Violet’ streak of color in her hair.

As you make your way through 2018, be on the lookout for Ultra Violet. I have a feeling this purple color will be popping up all around you.
